Hi all

One of my kids (11 yo) starts secondary school in a few days and we want to get her a SIM free phone.

She'll need to be able to use WhatsApp, take some photos, have GPS on so we can track her, and for the battery to last all day. Ideally stereo socket for headphones but not essential.

Are there any standout options here? Not sure of budget as I don't know what they cost for this type of thing.

Many thanks.

I thought all the kids had iPhones and if you had an Android other kids would call you poor :p

But seriously you could get an iPhone SE.

Xiaomi phones have come a long was this past few years, the Redmi Note series have worked well for my eldest daughter who has had a few incarnations of the Note model. The newer 12 looks pretty good too.

I've compiled a list of Geekbench V6 CPU scores from 5G phones released within the last year that sell for around the same price say £200 to £250.

In order of best Multi-Core Score

1. Samsung Galaxy A34 5G released March 2023 Single-Core Score 1036 Multi-Core Score 2514

2. Motorola Moto G73 released January 2023 Single-Core Score 910 Multi-Core Score 2254

3. Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 5G released January 2023 Single-Core Score 921 Multi-Core Score 2153

4. Xiaomi Poco X5 released February 2023 Single-Core Score 903 Multi-Core Score 2071

5. Nokia G60 released September 2022 Single-Core Score 901 Multi-Core Score 2059

6. Sony Xperia 10 V released June 2023 Single-Core Score 895 Multi-Core Score 2059

7. Honor Magic5 Lite released February 2023 Single-Core Score 899 Multi-Core Score 2054

8. OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite released April 2023 Single-Core Score 855 Multi-Core Score 2048

Of course there is more to a phone than CPU performance, screen, camera, battery, software update support policy.

Hi all. Thanks for all the help above.

I looked closely at a Xiaomi 12C, but Amazon had the Samsung A14 4G for £100, so we went with that.

Cheers again.

Good choice, a child isn’t really going to need 5G and the phones CPU performance is also adequate for a child...

Samsung A14 4G released March 2023 Single-Core Score 412 Multi-Core Score 1362

For £100 notes you can’t go wrong, even has a 3.5mm headphone socket.

Also need to get a phone for my kid. Will probably give my OP 7T and start using my S23+.

What precautions are everyone taking? I think there is a way to prevent them installing random apps right but I think that means you have to approve any game they want to install from the play store?
