I am looking for a cheap upgrade for my lads home pc, rather than having to ferry his main box to and from uni. Basically I am looking to get something that is comparable to his existing uni machine, which is an OC xenomorph 2010 vintage with an i3-530 overclocked to 4.2 with 4gig of ram.
Basically all I need is a motherboard, cpu and ram as he has everything else that he needs in his home pc and he can bring his GPU home with him. As I say I would like it to be as cheap as possible but somewhere near his xenomorph pc in terms of gaming performance.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Cheers

Similar to stulids spec and i added a link so you can compare CPUs. I prefer that mobo as it has multiple outputs for the IGP the gigabyte only has HDMI i do believe. I know you said he has a GPU to transfer but it's nice to have a mobo that can cater to a range of monitors without one.

Any questions or problems you know where we are

Thanks to the responses - appreciated. I fully concur with the i5 spec However to be honest I was looking for something cheaper than that. Basically it will be a machine that will be used for occasional gaming and bearing in mind what he already has it does not need to be any better. It just a means to an end. Would the new amd FX chips be suitable?

Take the FX chip and stuff it up AMD's ***! They freakin' SUCK!

I would go for the i3 as Incapable has stated in his post.

Will do nicely and the motherboard will be great for you to upgrade to a better SB or even IB rig in the future.

Future Proof!

Just a quick update which may be of help to others with the same predicament.

I finally went for an i3-2120 with a Gigabyte H61MA-D3V motherboard and 4GB Corsair XMS3 Ram. Purchased all three from OC when on special offer all for £156 inc VAT. The result was an easy rebuild - there is so much space left in the existing case. Put the GTX 460 into it and it all worked fine. Whilst the new setup won't set the "purists" heart racing it has provided a more than capable solution, which after all was what I wanted.
Been able to play Skyrim, Total War - Shogun 2. Just goes to show that you do not have to spend a lot of money to get something that is usable.
