After planning to buy some good quality (and expensive) equipment I decided to stay at my gym. Now, due to money issues, I want to leave the gym but buy some cheap equipment for home :p

I'm looking at around £250 max, but around 200 would be better.

What I need is basically dumbbells for DB press, and an oly bar for squats and Deads. I mainly only do compounds anyway.

How's this for a cheap starter bench?

needs to be able to be folded away, and compact.

This oly set also seems ok (to me), but no dumbbells

Any thoughts?

To give you a rough idea of what I'm lifting and so what I'd need:

Bench - 40kg ( :o )
Deadlifts - 80kg
DB press - 25kg

Why not just get some York weights to go with the bench?

As far as the bench goes, i've got one myself in the garage and it seems absolutely fine, haven't had any problems and it serves its purpose fine. It doesn't have a decline though.

Not really fussed about decline at the moment. Might look to get better equipment or go back to the gym next year. At the moment I do flat bench and incline DB press.

I thought the oly bar would be better for deads? Wouldn't I also be able to use it on the bench for bp?

It's up to you really but i'd of imagined you could get yourself some weights, straight bar and dumbells for the same price instead.

cool, I'll have a look at the standard bars, although there doesn't seem to be much at the site I linked.

Got a similar bench to that. You'll probably get people telling you it's not suitable, too flimsy and that you need to buy something else but it's been absolutely fine for me and I lift heavy.

Go for some York weights from the Argos site.

Don't forget to make sure you have room for a 7ft olympic bar! You need at least 11ft to use it properly (2 ft each end) which is quite a space

Argos seems expensive.

Any other places or recommendations?

:)

Free ads or local supermarket ad board. People are always getting rid of weights & benches they have bought and never used.

thanks, I'll have a look.

Any other suggestions? Does that bench/weights combo seem ok? Can't seem to find any good standard bar sets.

Check local papers etc for weights. Many people buy them with the intention of using them, and never do and then sell them. It's a much cheaper way of getting the actual weight discs.

EDIT: Been beaten to it.

found the bench cheaper by around £15 already, but no luck with the weights.

Wardie, just to check you've got the B500 bench right? Does it take up much space? Sounds stupid but it's going to be in my bedroom (master room with a single bed...lol) - that's why I need one that folds.

with these benches, can one do squats, ie stands can move back?

Afaik the cheap benches don't allow for squats but i may be wrong. I remember many years ago a mate had one of those benches that had racks on the back. They were very unstable and could only take a small amount of weight, not to mention they were very low.

I have it in the garage mate and that's fairly large so I can't really gauage it, it doesn't ever get folded up or anything so.

The bench isn't really big though :)
