Athlon 860K
2X4GB DDR3
1TB Western Digital Blue HDD
Affordable FM2+ motherboard
Affordable PSU
Affordable case

These CPUs can be overclocked, and you should overclock to get best performance.

Is your 560Ti 1GB or 2GB?

That's probably over budget but it's as low as I'd go. Power supply sucks but it's cheap. I'd suggest a better one honestly.

thanks for the reply the gpu is the 1gb one also i do not need a case ore power supply just a motherboard bundle and hdd/ssd

He's going to be pretty limited gaming wise with a 1GB card. Also 560Ti is not too powerful. He'll have to stick to older games or modern indy games and easy to run stuff like Cities Skylines, which my friend runs nicely on his 560Ti 1GB.

Storage comes down to how big the little feller's game library is. If he has 40 games, get a large HDD, if he only has a few or will only install a few get a smaller but faster SSD. Only you can decide. We can't tell you what to get without knowing the situation :).

Another option CPU wise would be a Pentium G3258 which is a dual core overclockable CPU. It has stronger performance per core than the Athlon but it is only a dual core with no hyperthreading. Back in 2014 it wasn't too bad a choice but so many games use more than 2 threads these days... I can't really recommend it any more.

Another good thing to pick up if you don't already have one is a controller such as a 360 or XB1 controller for fun stuff like geometry wars.

l would try and make a decision on whether or not a 120gb ssd or 1tb HDD is best suited, from personal experience, on kids PC's, small SSD's are worthless, they don't care about boot times, 120gb to 250gb fill up cery quickly unless well managed with a storage/games HDD drive.

I know, I have just replaced my older kids 120gb SSD's, they just kept needing storage sorted as it would continually run out. 250 is fine if all else is stored elsewhere, 120 marginal, but as long as game installs and dowloads etc managed. If he enjoys indy games etc he could fill a 500gb easily, my lads Xbox alone has 1.5tb of games that he does not play on the PC.

I would suggest a 1tb Blue, and maybe an SSD later as an upgrade. Or if you can stretch, a 120gb and 1tb if you can manage their games and download libraries for them.

Personally i would forgo the ssd and/or Hdd altogether and go straight for a SSHD. That will give you the capacity of the hdd and some of the response time that an SSD brings. boot time is a very poor indicator of the benefits of an SSD.

I would get a new/used graphics card tbh, 1gb vram simply isn't anywhere near enough anymore, I understand it's for a 10 year old but just saying mate. Would defo stick with SSD too. My 7 year old has my old Rig with a 2600k and r9 290x x 2 and he loves it, he's great on keyboard and mouse lol. They are never too young to learn, but when he starts becoming better than me I will have to put my foot down rofl :)

The bundle you specify with the G3258 looks fine.

Roverno has a good point regarding an SSHD, but they are not far off the price of a decent HDD and SSD.
£70+ for a SSHD versus £80+ for both 120gb SSD and 1tb HDD.

No one is questioning the performance benefit of SSD, but the percieved benefit a child will get from it once one considers a budget.

As for the GPU, there really is no need to upgrade that until your lad tells you there are games he cannot play. (My lads are stll using an old Sapphire HD4870 1gb Toxic GPU with no complaints)

My youngest is on his second year of a G3258 with a 560 and 120gb SSD. He is now 12.

All the kind games they play and stuff they do is perectly fine for this, and it is fast.

There is also a decent upgrade path, but I think it will still be another couple of years before needing to go quad core by upgrading the cpu.

The SSD is only now getting full, but deleting old stuff for new still works fine.

Don't buy an A10. It's just such a bad choice. You're better off getting an 860K and spending the extra quid on a used GPU like a 580 3GB for example. They're cheap.

I would never go with an APU. There are better solutions for very little additional investment.

The 3258 is a good performer for the cash but is limited to two threads and I personally would prefer the 4 (inferior) cores of an 860K. It is overall an inferior game but you'll never run into the problem of running a game and finding out it won't run because you need at least four cores for it (or four threads at least).

right my budget is now £400 but it dose need to include a corsair carbide 240 its mainly for playing wow watching youtube and homework think im going to go with a 240 ssd also a gpu as from what people have said the 560ti is a bit old now

no cooler needed as i had to buy a corsair h55
(the only cooler i could get local not even a air cooler)
as my 5 year old antec KÜHLER H2O 920 gave up the ghost yesterday so i will be using the h55 on the boys machine
cheers Nathan

I think you would be better off with a 120gb SSD and 1tb storage HDD, having just spent time going with a single ssd on my lads PC, from 120gb ro 240gb to 500gb back to the 120gb with an hdd.

Kids games take up space, but very little in the way of programs need installed on a kids pc.

I think the case is overkill, but do know kids have preferences that usually go beyond parental comprehension. As for the i3, I have a G3258 myself, it is great for the majority of games I play, but a few more senior titles are known to need more than 2 cores and I have no games on my G3258 system it cannot play, unlike crossfire.
My kids are not going to be playing any demanding AAA games any time soon they use an xbox one for that as it's where the majority of their friends play, my eldest is 12, youngest 6, and so far the most demanding PC game my lad has stated issues with was Fractured Space not liking his old Sapphire HD4870 1gb Toxic GPU, but no issues with his Q9550 and I can drop a 7950 in there with no issues should he need it. His current game of choice is Warhammer Space Marine, plus Gary's mod, Unturned, and C&C titles to name a few, and he never complains about his system. Though my lads may end up with the G3258 and a single 7950 within an S340.

I will say this and then I will leave the conversation- 90 pound? 90 pound on a case for a 400 pound build? Are you for real man?

That's just insane. 25% of your budget? On a case? That's so ridiculous. You should be looking at absolute bargain basement cases. You shouldn't even be looking at the 200R you should be looking at junker cases. Is it metal? Does it have fan mounts? It's for you. That's about it.

Hell, if my budget was only 400GBP I might not even USE a case for crying out loud.

I'm going to assume that the decision to spend a quarter of the budget on the case was a child's idea because no sane adult would do this.

Absolutely insane. That's my opinion. Cheers and good night.

My lads PC, one is 10yrs old, the other is 12 yrs old and into his games. They have no complaints about ths system, it was a mix of my old gaming PC and another.

Asus Maximus II Gene LGA775 Micro-ATX motherboard.
Intel® Q9550 CPU
Corsair XMS2-8500 8GB (4x2) 1066MHz DDR2
BeQuiet Dark Rock Advanced CPU cooler 95 x 122 x 166
Sapphire HD4870 1gb Toxic GPU
Samsung 840 Evo 120gb SSD
Samsung F3 1tb HDD
BeQuiet PurePower modular 630w psu
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit OS
Silverstone TJ08B-E case

My daughter's PC (6yrs old) Built with old HTPC spares and a few bargains.

Asus P5QL-VM EPU motherboard
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8500
Corsair Dominator GT 1066c5 2x2gb memory
PowerColor SCS3 HD 5750 1GB PCI-E passive cooled graphics card
SanDisk Ultra II 240gb SSD
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit OS
Corsair HX450w modular PSU
Samsung DVD/RW optic drive
Fractal Core 1000 Micro ATX case

Simple fact, no child NEEDS a £400 PC built for them, they do not NEED up to date GPU's if playing age related games or doing homework. They only need upgrades as they progress into usage of the PC that justifies the cost. My kids started like that, with me being into PC's tey will always get hand me downs though.

You started with a £150 budget and have a GPU, I have to say I am agreeing with the Quad core AMD budget offering. A budget PC case with a power supply included is £20 if you shop online.

Spending £90 on a case may be folly at this point, the system budget gains no benefit from such a case, a budget system will gain no benefit from a £15 or £150 case in a childs hands.
Spending £70 on a single 250gb SSD rather than £70 on a 120gb SSD and 1tb of storage? No matter what single SSD you get, if it's single it will fill up, no child will need 200gb of programs and OS space, they will need game storage.
£110 on a CPU when there most likely will be nothing your child is doing that an AMD 850K could not manage?

Of course all you need is a competent CPU, motherboard and 8gb or ram, with an adequate case and CPU, with your old GPU.

Total: £273.03
(includes shipping: £11.10)

You could have course go even cheaper, there are Budget case/PSU bundles for £20. There are even cheaper AMD motherboard/cpu bundles, maybe even 4gb of ram.

That said, the following sort of items would be my choice if building my 12yr old a new PC from scratch and reusing an old GPU.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £746.78
(includes shipping: £0.00)
