Hi all,

Looking for a cheap pc for my son so he can play Minecraft.

I presume it's not particularly intensive but what should I be looking for? He will be saving to buy it himself so the cheaper the better really.

Thanks

My son is currently playing Minecraft on an i3 2120 with on-board graphics, no problems.

Some of the settings are turned down, but it's perfectly playable.

If it's just for Minecraft I'd buy a cheap dell, hp or similar off ebay and stick a cheap graphics card in there.

The system requirements are:

Minimum Requirements:

CPU: Intel Core i3-3210 3.2 GHz / AMD A8-7600 APU 3.1 GHz or equivalent
RAM: 2GB
GPU (Integrated): Intel HD Graphics 4000 (Ivy Bridge) or AMD Radeon R5 series (Kaveri line) with OpenGL 4.4*
GPU (Discrete): Nvidia GeForce 400 Series or AMD Radeon HD 7000 series with OpenGL 4.4
HDD: At least 1GB for game core, maps and other files
OS:
- Windows: Windows 7 and up
- macOS: OS X 10.9 Maverick
- Linux: Any modern distributions from 2014 onwards
Internet connectivity is required for downloading Minecraft files, afterwards offline play is possible.
*Current minimum OpenGL requirements is 1.3, but modern GPUs often ship with newer versions of OpenGL

Recommended Requirements:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690 3.5GHz / AMD A10-7800 APU 3.5 GHz or equivalent
RAM: 4GB
GPU: GeForce 700 Series or AMD Radeon Rx 200 Series (excluding integrated chipsets) with OpenGL 4.5
HDD: 4GB (SSD is recommended)
OS (recommended 64-bit):
- Windows: Windows 10
- macOS: macOS 10.12 Sierra
- Linux: Any modern distributions from 2014 onwards

There is the super duper graphic pack coming soon so you'll need a 4k capable 1080ti rig shortly! :)

If its PC/java minecraft, whilst the best version for us, it is very badly optimised!
I'd advise researching how to install forge the mod loader and optifine which can seriously improve frame rates for lower spec machines!

I don't use minecraft but the kids do. One of them uses a lot of mods. The mods really are demanding. Draw distance also needs a proper gfx card.

if you are running the stock minecraft with no mods it runs on very little. That runs ok on my netbook with a atom processor and 2GB of RAM! But the kids won't use it. They want to use the PC because it can run the mods.

My OEM i3-2120 is starting to stuggle with other games though. It probably needs 8GB of RAM and a QuadCore or better for newer titles. I see the CPU maxed out on some games.

built one for my nephew a while back £500 for i5 4690 , z97, gtx 960 and 8GB of ram coming close to 2 ears ago- seems he puts it through its paces - but thats with spending hours creating giant maps and mods .

seems mine craft is one of those games anything can run it but if your a god at it, needs some thought

like above, went with a 500 quid budget, even with some mods this should be plenty capable..

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £497.63
(includes shipping: £11.70)

i havent played minecraft on pc since it went from free browser version(epic days with mods, wiki guides etc) to the paid version we have now, have played it on 360/xbox one and other than control layout for consoles, its just like the browser, so cant imagine it being much different on pc.
