My dads e2200 / p31 PC has died. Looks like the mono or specifically the on board gfx. It seems like a good opportunity to upgrade him.

Was thinking a8-5600k / a75 / 4gb / 64gb ssd

He should see a big jump to that especially as he has never had ssd before.

He just does general browsing and basic office stuff. No gaming or htpc requirements. Probably a bit of overkill but it I'm hoping 3-4 yrs use for him

Anything else to consider below £250. His monitor has HDMI so would prefer to have that on board.

I can probably use his current case / PSU / optical / mouse and kB / os

Cheers

Cheers Mickey. Good point on the ssd. I can probably do that but stick to 4gb and come under £250.

So everyone, the cpu is a good choice for the price bracket? Can't afford i3 and it seems overall a little better than the pentiums athough can't see a direct comparison to the g870

The A8K makes for a great Home PC, I've used it a lot for home builds. The IGP is actually gaming capable to a degree. It makes sense to use fast RAM because it helps the IGP and the price difference between 1600Mhz and 2133Mhz isn't massive.

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD A8-5600K Black Edition 3.60GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Quad Core Processor **FREE SIMCITY PC GAME** (AD560KWOHJBOX) £71.99
1 x Gigabyte F2A85XM-D3H AMD A85X Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 micro ATX Motherboard £61.99
1 x Toshiba SSD HG5D Series THNSNH 7mm 60GB Solid State Hard Drive - (THNSNH060GCST) £59.99
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Dual CHannel Kit (PV38G213C1K) £59.99
Total : £264.76 (includes shipping : £9.00).

This mobo has a 3 year UK based warranty (it's better than the Asrock) and also has the onboard HDMI you wanted. SSD is rapid as is the RAM but as you can see paying a little more would double the SSD capacity. Personally I'd probably want an ATX sized mobo like THIS but it's a little more cash and I'm already over budget.

So I think we are going with
AMD A-Series A8 5600K Black Edition
Asus F2A85-M LE, AMD A85X
4GB (2x2GB) Corsair DDR3 XMS3 Classic, PC3-12800 (1600), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9-9-9-24, 1.50V
SDSSDX-120G-G25 - 120GB SanDisk Extreme, 2.5" SSD, SATA III - 6Gb/s, Read 550MB/s, Write 510MB/s, 83000 IOPS Max.
Corsair CP-9020048-UK Builder Series CX 600W Power Supply (PSU)
Coolermaster Elite 344 Mini Tower

Comes in at £348 (he decided he wanted a new case and his old one had a dodgy built in psu)

Stuck with 4gb ram and a larger fast HDD given his use

Has anyone used this ram and board combo? Can't get it to boot. Ram is OK in a different machine and other ram on that board is fine. Not tried bios flash yet but no issues with comps at ability are mentioned
