I've got my head around what I'm doing with most of the custom loop I'm planning. The only thing I cant decide what to do with, is a drain.

I have 2 inlets into my res, so I suppose the lower one of those would be a good spot. So if I put a fitting onto that then attach a ball valve onto the line out from that, I guess that's it?

It means having to buy 3 extra fittings (as the ball valves look to be mostly female g 1/4 fittings) which is kinda annoying as its going to be pretty expensive for what should be a simple thing?

Any other cheap but safe ways to make it happen?

If you don't mind the look of it or could hide it somewhere you can buy a plastic barbed tee piece from a plumbers merchants with a couple of jubilee clips for a couple of quid. They will also sell you a 1/4" BSP ball valve too a lot cheaper. I used to do this when money was tight and the Mrs was moaning at me for wasting money on my computer!

Cheapest way is a plastic tub underneath a fitting. Open the fitting up and catch the fluid in the tub.
