Caporegime
A friend of mine asked me to build him a PC that could run modern games and especially Star Wars ones well for a 1080P resolution monitor/TV.
Budget was tight but I think I cracked it with new parts and some used parts.
The Parts
This is the list of new parts purchased.
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £159.22
(includes shipping: £11.70)
And used I got hold of,
My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £394.87
(includes shipping: £9.90)
The CPU was £110
The R9 380 was £95
RAM was £25
So all in the total cost is £377, I supplied a random 120mm fan for free for the front of the case.
The Parts and the Build
So starting with the case which is effectively £6 as the PSU is £42.95 by itself.
Not much to see, its clean looking and it has two USB2.0 ports, power ON/OFF, Restart, and audio jacks along with power/HDD LED.
You can fit a 90mm to the rear.
It is what it is....a cheap case.
Comes with a front cover adapter and a bag of screws etc.
Top mount for an SSD.
Front comes away and leaves the cables/buttons behind which I like.
A 120mm fan just clips in.
The PSU
Nice braided cables, all black and stealthy.
Stand offs now fitted.
Fit the I/O shield plate and screw the PSU in.
Fan facing down to exhaust hot rising air.
A H110 based board, it has the basics needed and will take an i7.
CPU in.
It is a used item so lets clean the CPU and heatsink surface.
Slap some AS5 on.
Fit the stock heatsink and the RAM.
Take the SSD.
And fit it to the 2.5" drive bay plate found in the top part of the case.
Fit the board/CPU/RAM combo and screw it in and add the cables.
You can see why I got the fan cable extension, otherwise the cable from the fan wont reach.
Grab a GFX card.
R9 380 4GB Strix, 2 months old..........nice.
A bit bloody wide, will it fit?
Removing the 3.5" drive plate it fits easily.
Put the plate back in, boy that is a close fit, but it fits.
A few well placed cable ties.
And she is ready.
Install Windows 10 and the drivers for the chipset, LAN, GFX, Audio etc.
And the job is a good'un.
