I've currently got a DG834N acting as wifi transmitter, but it is next to the master socket which is long enough away from the living room (where I use my laptop the most) to get a weak signal, combined with my daughter sleeping in that room which might or might not be good for her.

So, I would like to connect a wireless access point to my powerline network in the living room to get better signal there.

Can somebody recommend me a good/cheap wireless (g) access point?

edit: is it possible to get a wifi router (with adsl modem) and only use the wifi part, but not the modem?

Unfortunately you cant really get good AND cheap in the same product. Its usually one or the other. I personally recommend netgear pro series. Very good. Absolutely 100% reliable.
