Cheap upgrade needed. I've currently got a 3870 which I'm happy with but want to replace cpu and mobo.

I'd like to upgrade my ageing 939 3800x2 (clocked at 2.4) and asrock dual sata 2.

Its main use is media and gaming. So the best I can get for £130. I might be able to stretch a little more.

Cheers
Andy

I would look on the famous auction site as dual core socket 939 Athlon X2 3800 processors have sold for between £30 to £55 including postage in the last few weeks. Your motherboard has reached around £40 including postage in the last few weeks in one auction too. Since the motherboard uses DDR RAM you will need to get some DDR2 or DD3 RAM too. However you should also sell the RAM you have.

If you can stretch to around £150 I would look at the following:

1.)Athlon II X 425

These are available for around £55. It is not available on OcUK. I would also look at the X3 435 for a few quid more.

2.)MSI 770-C45

This is available for under £50 in many places and has both DDR2 and DDR3 versions.

3.)2GB of 1333MHZ or 1600MHZ DDR3 RAM.

You should be able to get this for under £45.

as cat-the-fifth has went the amd route i'll go the intel one :)

comes to £171 delivered.
this would be slightly quicker out the box than the amd system but the amd one would be easier to upgrade and more future proof.

Although if you spent £170 on AMD based system you get the X3 440 for around £66 and the build would be cheaper too! The place which does the X3 440 for £66 offers free postage.

This is faster in almost all games than a E6300:

Even if you add 5% to the E6300 gaming framerates for the nearly 5% increase in clockspeeds the X3 440 would still be faster.

The X3 440 is also faster than the new generation G6950 in most games too:

Thanks for the replies guys. I didn't realise the old parts still had some value.

So are these budget amd chips just stripped down phenoms? (Less cache etc).

You might wanna look at the Phenom II X2 550BE or 555BE if the main use is gaming - the L3 cache really helps!

Yeah that's where I'm not sure as gaming performance is really important. There is also a small chance I can unlock the other cores?

Some reviews are saying x2 phenom ii and others are saying get the atlon ii x3/x4.

I've got my old stuff on the Bay so I need to get something fast :D

New stuff coming (hopefully get 4th core or nice overclock)

1 x MSI 770-C45 AMD 770 AM3 DDR3 Support 8 channel Blu-ray Audio GB LAN ATX
1 x Kingston 2gb Ddr3 1600mhz Hyperx Memory Cl9(9-9-9-27)
1 x AMD Athlon II X3 435 2.9GHz Socket AM3 1.5MB L2 Cache Retail Box Processor

got £85 for my old cpu/mobo/ram and sound card.
