Could I built my own PC and it'll be cheaper? I would need a 10Gbp port, support for up to 8 10TB drives and hot-swapable. Probably with Freenas.

It'll only be used for storage of Xplane scenery to be shared between 5 PCs. So reads will be high but not writes.

  • Intel Pentium G4400
  • Asus - P10S WS (support for 8 SATA)
  • Corsair - ValueSelect 16GB
  • Intel X540-T1 10GbE
  • Corsair HXi 1200W (support for 16 SATA)
  • Logic Case SC-4320S

Looks feasible - I don't know if you've thought about adding a decent RAID card with some cache on it, or and a nice UPS to use so you don't loose the array in case of power failure? (A summing you are going to RAID)

I would be looking into if a small SSD read and/or write cache might provide a substantial performance boost as well.

That PSU is overkill BTW - maybe with money saved use an i3 instead for a higher thread count and cache

The PSU is the cheapest one with enough SATA power I think? Or maybe just buying a Synology is easier!
