Now I have been browsing a well known bidding website and have seen some unbranded netbooks available for about £50.00 delivered.

It states they run Windows CE.

My questions are -

1. Are these for real?
2. What is Windows CE exactly?

Basically, I am looking for the cheapest way to be able to game on my main rig, and use a netbook keep a webpage open and also run an admin programme on it. (for BFBC2).

Would one of these cheap things work, or is ordering one a massive no no?

Windows CE, is kinda like XP for PDA's m it's just a very slimmed down version of windows for very low performance hardware. Most netbooks don't use CE, they use XP or windows 7 instead.

£50.00 sounds stupidly cheap, what are the stats of the netbook?

I spose regardless of anything i've said, at least they will love you long time.
*waits to see how long it is till i get banned :P *

I wouldn't even class that as a netbook, the specs are pretty poor. 300mhz processor and 2GB hard drive? :(

wow.. thats erm slow. Brash of them to call it a "netbook", more like a slimmed down pda, but into a bigger case. I would stay away from that tbh, not worth your £50...

Thats not a netbook IMO. A Netbook is supposed to be for ultra mobile computing and browsing the web. I have an NC10 with W7 Pro, a 1.6ghz Atom and 2gb RAM, and that's slow enough.

Not worth the £50 if you ask me, you can get black NC10s for around £175 on eBay.

Indeed but you are missing the point. I ain't spanking £175.00 just to run an admin programme!

I only need it for one thing.

Is it too much of a risk to buy it just for that?

It's worth a try but I doubt it's much good for anything. I'd try to put an old version of windows on, I think CE is based on XP, it's do better with 95/98/ME.

For that task it might be alright, to put in perspective, I used to have a Toshiba laptop with a 400mhz CPU, 64mb of ram and ME, and it ran Office 2000 with no trouble at all.

I would so it would do that task alright, but I'd still recommend getting a proper netbook, then it'd be able to do an awful lot more.

Ok.

I am keeping an eye on a refurbed IBM X60 and the auction finishes soon so if I can bag it for less than £100.00 it will be mine!

*edit scrap that idea I did not realise how old they are!*

Those netbooks are so cheap because they run ARM processors, hence having Windows CE on them. You could probably compile Linux for it but any x86 version of Windows is a no go. You can still get CE apps and it can be useful but for the app you want to use it's not much use. :(

I did think of getting one myself but they're only really worth getting if you're a hobbyist. You might want to just look out for a cheap old laptop that will run at least Windows XP.

Found a second hand Toshiba laptop w/Win XP for about £65. Would probably need a Wi-Fi dongle though. I can message you the link if you like as I am unsure if it can be posted here.
