My daughters are 4 and 3. The eldest already uses pcs at school and whe the youngest starts she will be also.

My pc is totall youit of bounds to anyone so im looking to build them a cheap pc and find out what software they use in school.

My sisters little lad is 5 and he is really good with the pc. He finished call of duty before i did

Dont want to spend a fortune, thibking of cobbling one together from old bits.

Ive got a Athlon 1Ghz ( Thunderbird i think ), a cheapo PC Chips mobo ( but will take up to a 3200XP ) and a Radeon 9600XT 256Mb - or if i give that to my dad, a Radeon 9250SE 128Mb and ive got a 52x CDROM

I need RAM - 256Mb will do - a HDD - 20Gb will do, a cheapo CRT and a case.

Would this be capable of running XP and the school type softeare? Or am i better off trying to get a very cheap soclet 754 or 939 agp system on MM?

Ive seen XP running on a computer built around the time of Win95 so I reckon you can run XP no problem on that.

For the rest of your kit you may want to look around the Clearance and B Grade sections of OcUK.

As for the school software - you wont have any problems at all. Most school software tends to be very basic, so if you can run XP I doubt most other software will be a problem :)

My little girl is using a old tbird 1400in a similar system, only really used paint and a bit of typing!
Would be good to see what software youre thinking of installing....

I was running Windows XP very comfortably on a 1.2Ghz Athlon with 512mb Ram so your 1ghz and 256mb should manage fine, my laptop is only an 850Mhz PIII with 128mb Ram and that copes which means that anything above that should be pretty easy.

What you can do depends on how much you want to spend overall but the basic system as suggested(1Ghz, 256mb Ram and 9250+) is fine for most software and a few older games, I played Vice City etc quite happily on mine when I had it :)
