Setting up a PO Box costs about £50(year) with Royal Mail.

I need a semi-official address to use for registering domains, which may become part of an online business. A "whois" on the domain shouldn't show my home address, be false or hidden.

Are there any alternatives to a using a PO BOX on my address?

Lots of companies/accountants/solicitors offer a registered office service but am I understanding correctly that you want it cheaper than £50/year? Not a chance in hell, sorry :). Royal Mail's PO BOX service is about as cheap as it gets.

Hide your address from the whois?

Can't do that unless you're a non trading individual :).

Some domain registrars do provide a 'proxy' registration whereby their address is entered however, if ownership of the domain is ever disputed, this could put you on shaky ground. I wouldn't recommend it.
