A friend might be moving into a property in my line of sight so rather than them have to pay phone line and internet, I would like to share my internet with them, I need to be able to have a point to point link through glass, with an AP at the other end in a different IP range.

To be able to limit bandwidth would be nice but no essential as it's an elderly person so unlikely they will be downloading the latest and greatest movies 24/7.

How cheaply can this be done?

Is it actual line of sight and there's just glass in the way?

Ubiquiti NanoStation will more than likely cover you here - go for 2.4GHz if you need to get through trees etc. Should cost you about £50 an end, you can rate limit on the radios if you want to.

What distance?

+1 for Ubiquiti Nanostations. We use a couple of sets in work. Connection has been flawless for years. Only gone down when we run firmware updates.

If it's just across a courtyard then you could probably get away with just laying the things down and pointing them in entirely the wrong direction. A couple of old routers running a custom firmware to enable them to a client/AP would probably work just fine as well.
