The girlfriend's machine has my old GTX260 in it at present but the fan is giving up the ghost and getting noisier/whinier so I want to replace it with something else.

I'm not looking for a high performance part - the grunt of the GTX260 is more than adequate for the stuff she plays so am after something of roughly similar performance but as quiet as possible. Would prefer NVidia but will consider ATI too.

Suggestions?

The HD 6770 with the ASUS directCU cooler installed at £90 is a really good option imho, even though it's an AMD card (not that should really matter tbh). The 6770 is basically just a rebadged 5770 - so for comparing performance use the 5770 as it has been out much longer and appears in more tests.

On the green team, this GTS 450 is a similar price but it's not as fast as the 6770/5770 (see this review).

If you are willing to try an OCUk refurbished card with a 1 year warranty - then this GTX 460 768MB is a fantastic deal. It is a lot faster than a GTX 260 or HD 6770 (see here) and costs less than any of the cards mentioned above - the cooler on the GTX 460 is also really rather quiet. However, the warranty would be a problem if it decided to fail a year down the line.

On balance, I would probably go with the ASUS HD 6770 - with its 3 year warranty, quiet cooler and GTX 260 level performance.
