Hey Guys,
I'm looking to build a very cheap server for multiple uses. Currently i'm studying my HND in programming and will be starting Uni Applied Computing in Sept. I've pretty much been taught the very basics of programming but would like to take this further on my own. I've been taught a little of C++, Java, SQL and quite a bit of VB.
For this years graded unit ( My final mark - A - B - C ect. ) I am making a program that manipulates an access database with 6 tables with VB. I'm about halfway thought having this completed but it only manipulates a local database held on the pc. Once this program is completed ideally I would like to learn to set up and run a server database via SQL / Oracle and make connections directly to it.
My father is very interested in this too as he works heavily in IT validation and would like to have a server to play with also. We have decided to put some money together and build a server we will operate from his house. I live in Dundee and he lives in Perthshire so it will be quite far away.
I am more than capable of building a pc and overclocking ect. I'm not quite sure what would be the best components for this. I have been looking at old Q6600's on ebay and feel there quite cheap at about 60 - 80.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanking You,
Kev
