Cheap setup for Minecraft server?

Sorry if this is the wrong section but could do with some assistance.

A friend has an old all in one he is using for a minecraft server, however it appears to be on its way out. we are looking into a cheap computer build for a server but i'm unsure what to get for it. any help is appreciated.

Minecraft is single threaded so get the highest clock speed dualcore in your budget, 8GB RAM and you should be golden.

I used my old Acer Aspire 5535 laptop as my server and it ran great + playing the game as well! Just make sure you have dual core as a minimum & 4GB of ram you can dedicate to the server. So have 8GB in place.

How many people are you having on the server?

its 7-8 people max online however that including the mindcrack modpack plus 4 or 5 other mods included which apparently take up ram in place of players. we looking at something as cheap as possible, but wont cause issues for players on the server. my co host did see this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-005-EP&groupid=43&catid=2478&subcat= and wondered if it would be enough

i was thinking build yourself to be honest as you can normally get a good setup.

Another suggestion -

Get a minecraft dedicated host to host the server? Save's on energy bill's and it's all simple FTP. I'd suggest redstoneHost as they have really good servers for the price.
