My dad is after a cheap printer, he will only be printing black and he doesn't want one that takes up much room.

Also needs to have cheap refills.

I was looking at Canon Pixma IP1900, HP Deskjet D1660 or EPSON Stylus S21.

A quick google suggests the Epson has cheap cartridges but are they smaller?

It won't really be used loads and in the past we have has Epsons stop working with not much use.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I'm not sure what you consider to be cheap or small but I had similar needs a couple of years ago. I ended up buying a HP Laserjet 1018 for £50 on sale.

Although the toner costs as much as the printer did, they do last much longer. I am still on the one that came with it. The physical size isn't bad either compared to a decent colour inkjet.

It may be an option worth considering as there are places that will refill laser toner cartridges too. If you shop around you should be able to find a basic mono laser for a similar price.

Edit: Another advantage with a laser is the toner won't dry up if it isn't used much. It may settle a bit but a gentle shake can help with that.

A laser would definitely be a good choice in my opinion. I bought an epson sx400 for university and the black cartridges are about £10 for the official ones. Its not a bad printer and cartridges are much cheaper than the HP i had before but i go through them pretty quick and if it hasn't been used for a while the first few sheets are poor quality.

Lasers have come down massively from what they used to be and you can probably pick one up for a reasonable price. If colour isn't needed I'd go with a laser.

You can get a HP P1005/P1006 for £79 from a highstreet store, I have one, the compatible carts are £18 each and officially get 1500 pages (at whatever coverage).

£80 is probably double what he was looking to spend tbh, also looking at the laser ones, they look huge.

Personally I would go for a laser but I doubt I can talk my dad into it.

i just got an epson sx215 for £40. granted its bigger than he'd want and has a scanner etc, but the carts are about a quid each.

suggest looking at a cheaper, smaller epson
