I'm about to build a new PC and I want to put Windows 8 on it.

I've heard that it can be pre-ordered for as little as £25, but I've not seen where so I assume it's for Microsoft 'members' only. The cheapest I've seen is purpleshirtworld for £50.

What's the cheapest way for ordinary Joe Public to buy a legitimate copy of Windows 8, OEM or retail?

You can't buy it through retail channels until 26/10/2012 when it's released to the public.

£25 will be the cost of the online upgrade direct from MS with a qualifying product (XP, Vista, 7).

Will that upgrade be standalone Windows 8 installer or would you have to upgrade a PC with XP, Vista, Win 7 already installed on it?

If you read the comments on that blog I posted you'll see there'll be a way to upgrade without having a qualifying install already on the machine. I don't know how it will work, MS weren't particularly forthcoming in their response.

Upgrading from the CP and being licensed to do so are two different things. You'll still need a qualifying OS on the box.
