Cheap sund card with optical out.. DD?DTS problem

One of my friends purchased a trust catd, about £15 or do.. with an optical out, on the udnerstanding that it would simply pass through digital audio from a source, such as dvd...

Now when we were playing a dvd the audio via the optical cable to the amp was not recognised by the amp as a DD or DTS signal, and owuld not play it as 5.1...

Would we need a card that supported DD/DTS, bearing in mind the ceap card should just be passing through the signal...

Both the card and your playback software need to be set to SPDIF passthrough for this to work.
