Giving away my old AMD K6-2 500 to a mate. This will be his 1st pc and will last him a couple of months until he gets the hang of computing & the internet etc.
I have promised to build him a better pc later in the year. He will be just surfing, downloading music/films etc, possibly some basic photoshop. He won't be playing any games (I don't think) so integrated graphics will probably suffice. Any suggestions? I was thinking along the lines of a cheapo Celeron system maybe. Don't need monitor, keyboard, mouse, HDDs or optical drives -just case, cpu, mobo, ram, half decent onboard sound or cheapo sound card, onboard graphics with option to upgrade later if necessary. Looking to spend approx £200 -300.
Any ideas please? Many thanks :)

You might want a better CPU/Case?

That looks ok. Is the mobo likely to take an IDE HDD as well as SATA?

Yes, all motherboards still have at least one IDE port on them and since IDE supports 2 devices you are fine.

I might opt for a slightly better case/PSU combo but otherwise that system looks fine albeit at present way overkill for downloading/surfing use.

hehe yeah I was thinking the same. Might just give him my old XP1600+ system that my son is currently using and upgrade my son to a better gaming system :D
Nah, I can't do that, he's been a damn good mate over the years & deserves a decent system that will last him a while.
