Cheap switch

I'm currently using an old Netgear switch which seems to run alarmingly hot considering the power supply is external.

I'd like to replace it with something which runs cooler. Can anyone recommend me a fairly cheap gigabit switch (4 port minimum) which runs nice and cool?

There's a few of 5 port Gigabit switches available on OcUK starting at £11.99. I have an older version of the TP-Link one and that works great.

The 8-port versions are barely any more expensive than the 5-port ones, I'd get one of those. The metal ones are more expensive but which one is better depends on looks and your needs; the metal ones will be better if you don't want the flashing LEDs visible during normal operation. If you do want the indicators visible, you might prefer the plastic.

More recent switches have looked to improve energy efficiency, so newer ones should run cooler.

Is it just me or does the SG108 and the netgear GS108 look to be the same thing?!

You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference,I think the metal case ones can take a lot more abuse than the plastic ones and they could probably run cooler because of the metal too?

Cheers guys. In the end I found a Netgear GS308 at work which was metal cased and stone cold to the touch so ordered a couple of those to replace two of my old switches at home.

Been running a few of the 5 and 8 port Netgear GS (E) series managed switches with the metal case (or that style case not sure if they are all metal) - so far been brilliant, cool to the touch, high performance and just keep running without any interaction needed.

I just checked one of my switches in the loft and the cobwebs were something to see, maybe I should get in there more often to give them a dust.
