I have been looking at getting a cheap tablet lately for travelling to Africa.
I don't want an Ipad or some of the other bigger names as none have host USB capabilities. I was initially looking at the Archos 101 G9 something or other but heard the screens were a bit iffy so swerved that.

Two I have found are the following.

Scroll Elite 9.7" Tablet

Or Ampe A10 10.1" Tablet
http://www.ebellking.com/android-tab...blets/ampe-a10

From what I understand, The Ampe unit will show movies as they were meant to be displayed but due to the size on the Scroll it will display movies in a standard ratio whereas Ampe will be in widescreen. From what I have read, The screens are the same type as the Ipad2 and give excellent quality.

I have also noticed that the Scroll Elite uses the Cortex A8 1.2GHz chip where as the Ampe A10 uses the AllWinner A10, 1.0GHz, Cortex A8.
Which chip is better? I have no idea about tablet processors.

I can't find any reviews on either but I did notice another retailer has a Scroll extreme 9.7" which is basically the exact same item and it gets very good reviews.

Both have ICS (Latest Android) All connectivity I was looking for such as HDMI, USB host, Upgradeable memory etc.

Any thoughts or anyone use any of these items?

I believe they have the same base architecture,

I had an Ainol Aurora what had the AllWinner chip, and it handled everything fine.

What is your budget?

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I haven't really set a budget but want a tablet that I can connect a USB drive into directly (Or via a mini usb port without the need for adapters/dongles etc)
I would probably prefer to keep it under the £250 mark as with working in the areas I work in, There is a good chance someone will take off with it!

The A10 is a very good chip for the cash, but to be honest, if you're budget is £250 you can get a Tegra 2 Tab for that (Something like a Acer A500, Motorola Xoom, Asus Transformer etc) They have a dual core 1Ghz (most can be clocked past 1.4Ghz) with 1GB memory.

Wife had an A500 and it had HDMI, USB Host etc, very well built too. 16GB and MicroSD slot for upto another 64GB (plus USB port for an external HDD!!) It now officially has ICS too.

Thanks for the input!!
I never realised the Acer A500 had those features. I've just been reading the reviews online and it does sound good to me.
How do you get ICS on it? Is it a download update? Also where would you get one for roughly £250?
I actually quite like the look of the Xoom too. I think I may have been swayed from the cheaper ones to one of these you have mentioned. Does the Xoom have USB host capabilities for a HDD?

If the A500 is stock, it'll just update automatically (assuming it hasnt been updated already!) I'm not sure where you can get them for £250 now but that was the going rate for a fair amount of time now. I've seen quite a few of them on Hotukdeals.

I'm not sure which other tabs have USB host, but I'm sure a quick Google search could tell ya pretty quickly. Probably worth checking for ICS too, although Honeycoombe is not a million miles away but ICS is better.

I do like the look of the Motorola Xoom that's for sure. Apparently it is getting thE ICS update too and can become USB host capable by a little work around I'm currently looking into. I would rather spend the extra £50 on one of those compared to the ones I linked in the first post!!:D

The quality of the device will be much better, thats for sure. Honeycomb is not that bad, it's very similar to ICS actually, I was really impressed by it when I first saw it in motion.

I searched on Hotukdeals and there has been loads of Xoom's and A500's popping up in the last 4 weeks for around £250, but theres also quite a few on eBay for £250 too.

According to Wiki, heres some other tabs that share the same chipset:
Acer Iconia Tab A100, A200 and A500, Asus Slider, LG Optimus Pad, Avionic Design Tamonten Processor Board,[15] Exper EasyPad, Notion Ink Adam tablet, Olivetti OliPad 100, Point of View Mobii 10.1, ViewSonic G Tablet, Motorola Xoom,[16] Toshiba AC100, Toshiba Folio 100, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, Advent Vega, Hannspree Hannspad, Aigo n700, CompuLab Trim-Slice nettop, Dell Streak 7, E-Noa Interpad, Malata Tablet Zpad, MSI 10-inch (250 mm) tablet, Toradex Colibri Tegra 2, Toshiba Thrive tablet, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, T-Mobile G-Slate, Lenovo IdeaPad Tablet K1, Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet, Velocity Micro Cruz Tablet L510, Dell Streak Pro,[17] Zyrex Onepad SP1110, Zyrex Onepad SP1113G, Sony Tablet S

A fair amount of devices then! I think I'm sold on the Xoom. It looks fairly pleasing to the eye compared to others. I've been told that it can take portable HDD's so i'm 99% sure that that is the tablet for me now :D
Thanks for the help and the point in the right direction!!

I don't know whether it meets your connectivity criteria but upon searching for some of the tabs mentioned in this thread I realised that the Samsung Galaxy Tab2 10.1 is only £299 on Amazon, I think I'll get one of those, primarily for toilet and tv room based browsing, no Africa for me.:D

I did also look into that earlier today. It does look like a nice pad for sure. I think I'm sold on the Xoom. It appears you need to get hold of the Samsung dock port item for connecting up HDD's etc. Not really a problem. I hear the screen is meant to be really good on the Samsung though.

Well I was nearly through the checkout for a Motorola xoom and spotted something about the new Toshiba AT300.
That sounds quite an interesting tablet and apparently supports USB host but it also has reports of not being able to read NTFS only exFAT. I may hold off a bit now until I find out the full story.
