upgrade from cheap psu to corsair builder CX500 500W. worth it?

Depends how cheap really. The CX500 shoudln't be considered top end PSUs really. They are just low end brand namers.

The CX500 will do, but if you want more in terms of future upgrade, a GS600 or OCZ ModStealthXStream 600W (or better) will allow you to upgrade your graphics card up to a GTX 580 and CPU to Sandybridge.

It depends on your current PSU though. Just looking at the specs on the side may be telling.

If you are using some generic or low quality brand PSU - then I say go for it - the CX 500W is a decent unit.

That said, I would suggest spending the extra few quid and going for this XFX Pro 550W Core Edition (here is a review), its higher efficiency and a bit more powerful - so you have more headroom for future upgrades.
