Hi all,

Currently I have an AMD 2800XP, with an Asus Deluxe A78NX. Not long ago I bought an AGP ATI 1650 XT, so I don't want to upgrade to a PCI-Express Mobo and have to buy a new card.

I've looked at the following, but I'm unsure whether it's compatible or not:

Asrock AM2NF3-VSTA (Socket AM2) AGP DDR2 Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400DC)

Will they work together, and is it worth upgrading to it (i.e will I see a difference)?

Any help is appreciated. :)

Thanks.

How about this:

Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.60GHz (800FSB) - Retail £45.99
(£54.04) £45.99
(£54.04)
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400DC) £46.99
(£55.21) £46.99
(£55.21)
Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA (Socket 775) PCI-Express/AGP DDR2 Motherboard £39.99
(£46.99) £39.99
(£46.99)
Sub Total : £132.97
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
City Link Parcel Next Day (Delivered Mon-Fri)
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £8.25
VAT is being charged at 17.5% VAT : £24.71
Total : £165.93

About £18 more expensive but should give better performance :)

Thanks for the info., could you explain how it's faster? The speed says it's slower in GHz... it's a bit confusing. :D

Also, just so I know, will the ones I chose work together? The current motherboard is out of stock, so your choice is looking better.

Will is on to a winner...I used to like AMD too, but lets face it intel is far better these days...the C2D setup will recommended is DEFINATELY the way to go. You can keep your old DDR ram and AGP card as well and make it even cheaper.

The Clock speed is not a good representation of overall processor performance. The processor architecture defines performance.

The Intel Core architecture is better then A64, if overclocked the Intel is even better.

Plus compared to your old setup you should really see an improvement.

Will work fine, but the Intel setup will be a better choice overall.

Thanks all.

I've not tried Intel since my first ever PC years ago... guess it's time for a change. :D

Edit: Would I be able to use my old DDR 3200 Ram too?

See i dont agree with that comment one bit to be honest.

When your not overclocking and you cant afford chips like the Core 2 Duo E6420 and above, AMD will be so much better, you will get much better performance from AMD if your on a tight budget.

But I know for a fact that that setup will suggested will overclock to 2.6Ghz with the stock cooler...now tell me what's faster.

Yes i know Intel is the way to go when overclocking, but when your not theirs nothing wrong with AMD.

Please read carefully next time, thanks.

Woohoo! Even cheaper upgrade! Thanks.

I'll definitely be overclocking it, the "official" E2140 thread had some seriously nice speeds posted, and anything above 2Ghz would suit me I think. :)

If your overclocking the E2140 is a fantastic choice. :D

I fancy a cheap upgrade using the below options as mentioned by Will. In the OC store the only motherboard they have is the Asrock 4CoreDual-SATA - is this the same one?

Also it sayd the motherboard only supports memory speeds to 667 so will the 800MHz memory work? (or is this part of the overclocking idea for the system?)

Sorry for so many questions - I'd appreciate some help on this :D

This would be better, only a tenner more:

EVGA nForce 650i Ultra (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (122-CK-NF66-T1) £54.99
(£64.61) £54.99

Nforce 650i Ultra is FAR better than an Asrock 4CoreDual (trust me, I have both of those motherboards).

Thanks for the reply.

I will be keeping my existing 6800GT AGP card which is why I went for the Asrock board. Does your suggested board support this, a quick search suggests not?

Ah no, I didn't realise you were keeping your older card. The 650i ultra does not support AGP, only PCI-E.

Oops - forgot to mention that in my original post.

Has anyone got any suggestions for a good ATX case to house this in. My existing Dell case will have to go!

I'm looking for something cheap, that will house up to 4 HDDs and be cool enough when overclocked.

Cheers (Sorry for the hijack! :))
