Hi all

Wondering if you can help me.
Looking for a cheap ram upgrade for my Amd phenom 2 955 set up
Currently has Asus m4a785td-v motherboard with 2x2 gb of patriot g series sector 5 pc3 10666c9 ram in it.
Noticed that tecomend specs for some games now say 6 gb and 4 minimum .Can I buy 2 gb to make it 6 or so I need to keep it in pairs so would have to go 8 gb.
Just looking for a cheap upgrade and don't mind 2nd hand either .

Any help will be greatly appreciated .

Thanks

I would go for 8gb in total as it will leave you room and also run in dual channel. Make sure your operating system will be able to use all the ram.

I'm running windows 7
Is it worth me just getting 2 x 4gb sticks and selling my 4gb or just fill the other 2 slots with 2x 2gb ?
Any recommendations on the ram ?

Cheers

You can add a single stick but the board may run in single channel mode, you might be better adding two 4gb modules and selling the the other 2.

But, is your operating system 32 or 64 bit?

I'm on win 7 64 bit.
Would adding an extra 4gb stick but running in single channel mode be better than the 4gb in dual channel?
Might see if I can stretch to 2 4gb slots and keep my existing so I'd have 12 gb .
Is there any ram you would recommend ?
Thank you for your help

The ram should work fine in your system, but a couple of things to try; reset the CMOS and see if this helps, if not try checking your BIOS revision as you might need the latest for better ram support.

Ok I will try the cmos 1st in the morning where can I find my bios version and where will I find the updates lol
Sorry for the noob questions.
Thank you for your help

This is annoying, Asus website appears not to show your motherboard for some reason, they might be doing some updates behind the scenes. :(

Ok i had downloaded it lol

Now im scared :)

I went to open it and it said to search for a programme to open it with and thought id just check here lol

You be fine, just delete the downloaded file :p

What would normally happen is you would copy that BIOS file to a memory stick (I normally format in fat) and then reboot your system and enter the BIOS and choose the option to update the BIOS from there. But as Asus are not showing me your motherboard I cant fully check :(

ok i have a brand new memory stick i got from work today o that will be fine .
Just need the correct bios.

I havent updated it since i got the PC .
Just checked and that was June 2010 lol so the RAM probably isnt supported by the original bios as 4gb chips wernt out

Just like to say thank you to RJC for the help.
I found the correct bios for my motherboard and found out Asus had a Bios updater tool.
I did try to download the bios with the update tool but it couldnt connect to the server properly so i found it manually and ran the updater and hey presto it instaled it in 5 seconds and asked to reboot and job done.
Put the Ram in and it picked it up straight away.

So thank you very much i now have 12gb ram working and can finally play GalCiv3 :)

Hi Kieves1, that is good news :)

You would not of thought updating the BIOS would be so hard :D

Not in this day and age no lol.
Having to flash a bios seems so old school when you think how much technology has come on.
There is pretty much an app or programme for everything these days but Bios is still in the dark ages.

Cheers for your help :)

The annoying thing is ive kinda got the upgrade itch now lol .Havent done anything to it since i built it in 2010 except put an aftermarket cpu cooler on.
It should keep me going for a while longer with my 5770 powering through the games lol :)
