I'm not going to go too much into detail, but does anybody have some experience in the proper, proper cheap (Sub £1000) Van market?

Now, my first thought was that a grand would never buy anything that fitted into the London Low emission zone rules (basically needs to be 2002 plus or petrol) but a brief look on Auto trader and ebay shows that although the pickings are slim, there is are pickings. So this is where I've stopped and decided to ask for help because quite frankly I don't have a clue what I'm looking at.

At a guess a Berlingo would be the best bet? I assume they use the same 2.0 HDI engine from things like the 306 which is supposed to be pretty reliable?

Alternatively I could just go with an estate car for the same sort of value, but I would prefer the veritility of a proper van ideally.

Thoughts?

Get one with the 1.9 TD engine - its noisy and diesely but its a van, diesels belong in vans, and it's super-reliable and can be fixed by a blind muppet for 20p when it breaks.

From what I'm seeing I don't think the early non van was available with the 1.9 TD engine, just the non turbo variant which is slower and costs more to tax than the 1.4 petrol.

The later ones were available with the 2.0 HDI lump, but are out of my shoe string budget.

A friend of mine use to have a escort van which served him well.. Just an idea. dont really know much about them but they can be picked up cheap
But i have no idea if these can me used in the LEZ

If you're looking at the Berlingo then you've probably already thought of it but the Renault Kangoo is fairly similar in size and style. It's far from the worlds most inspiring drive but it should do the job. The only things I know about reliability are from the fact my parents own one, seems to be reasonably solid but occasional issues with engine management lights from what I recall - I'd have to check with them what they were for though as I can't remember offhand although I don't think it was anything too serious.

not sure of ins and outs but my brother owns a company and they loads of Berlingo vans, as he says they get them for next to nowt, run them till they are dead and throw them in bin, while that may be a simplistic view fo things he saays it works as that cost so little
