Hi Peeps,

Its been a while since my system had an overhaul, considering getting the new socket 2011 stuff (MOBO/CPU/RAM) in jan/feb, just wondered if there was any news relating to cheaper processors coming out soon, im quite daft with upgrade money and want to try and avoid spending £500+ on a processor (again).

Cheers

There is indeed such a processor in the pipeline; the i7-3820, which should apparently come in at ~£250. It's a quad core as opposed to a hex core as found in the i7-3930k and i7-3960x.

I can't understand the point of the i7 3820 though, might as well get an Ivy Bridge cpu when they are realeased on the cheaper socket 1155?

Indeed, I agree. I can see only two reasons for getting an i7-3820. The first is if you can't afford/justify getting the i7-3930k, but want the option of getting an 8 core Ivy Bridge-E late next year. The second is that you do something that benefits from lots of RAM and memory bandwidth, but doesn't require much processor power (relatively speaking). I don't know of any examples of such a workload, however. In that instance, however, you'd probably be better served by an AMD Opteron system.
