A mate of mine is building his new pc. Unfortunately he cant post here so he asked me to post for him.

He's got a maximum budget of £350 and he's a bit of an Nvidia fan. with his money, I can push him a bit more to get the Leadtek GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB for £370.11 or the EVGA GeForce 7950 GX2 1024MB for the same price.

Which one of the two should i recommend to him?

Thanks in advance!

I know dx isnt a factor yet but it'd be silly not to buy the 8800 if you can. Obviously nvidia agrees as they have stopped making the gx2

The GTS overclocks well, keeps up with a GX2.

you mean to say that the GX2 is better than the GTS?

Also, how about the Sapphire ATI Radeon X1950 XT-X TOXIC Slave Edition 512MB GDDR4? it seems to be in the same price range

Would be madness to pay £370 for a GX2 at this point, pure insanity.

The 8800GTS can be had for a lot than this if you shop around, and is a far better card. It might lose in some benchmark tests but thats not really the point, its a single card, so you've got no SLI compatability nonsense going on.

All your games will play well, not just ones optimised for SLI.

They supposedly overclock quite well too.

Do not buy a GX2, of all the graphics cards its got to be the worst one to get right now, I'm sure give it a few weeks and this card will be sold for peanuts, since it doesn't really have a place in nvidias lineup anymore.

ok so i would definitely tell him to go for the 8800 gts :D

another thing.. the item description says "Finally 500W minimum for PSU and 600W+ is recommended."

My friend's cpu case is the antec tx1088 amg comes with 480 Watt TruePower 2.0 power supply. Is this not enough to power the 8800 or a psu upgrade needs to be done?

Id take that down if I were you, recently you can't even post indications of price.

It's a bit pathetic. If OCuk have the best prices and they want us all to shop with them over the competitors then why worry about who is selling what at said price as OCuk should beat them, right???. :p :D I understand why in some points but not as much in others.

The nature of the question means that a rough guide to prices has to be give, I'm just saying the GTS is cheaper than the GX2 anyway, to not say this would just be nasty, im not going to knowingly give dodgy info!!!

Well it's a commendable service you've provided and will be appreciated.

I just hope the strictness comes down a notch. Thats why I hardly post. I've been trolling these forums for ages before I registered.

I accidentally made my sig over the size yesterday and got the message if that I don't change it that I could be banned. OTT as it was an accident.

I agree. But I'll still warn someone when they do it, hate to see someone banned cos no one told them. At the moment any reference to lower prices just brings down the Sword of Damocles.
