As title really... my current phone had taken a battering (old winmo) and I'd like something to tide me over until my contract expires (~6 months).

the new t mobile pulse. forgot its exact name. capacitive and android 2.1 easy to unlock and easily modded. check out modaco forum for more info

I assume you mean SIM Free/Unlocked or PAYG? What network?

i5700 or the LG GT540 are on play for £200. You sure you want to spend that much on something to last 6 months though? I'd recommend something like the Nokia C5 or even something cheaper.

Exactly at that level it's almost worth me paying up my contract early and getting something really good for £30 per month (e.g. Desire)?. Will have to have a think. :p

Pulse Mini has a resistive screen. But yeah.. cheap, easy to unlock, has 2.1

Galaxy portals go on ebay for around £130, this is my temp phone until my contract is up for a desire... It's a pretty good phone all reound, when flashed to 2.1 itis much better and I think the best handset around for that kind of price.
