Cheapest CPU equivalent to a Core 2 Duo E6600

I need a cheap CPU to replace the above, I am not fussed if it is AMD to Intel as I will need to buy a board for it to go with.

I didn't really want to spend almost £100 on a CPU. Add a motherboard to that and I would be half way to upgrading my 2500k and using that. :D

I'd even consider the G550 Celeron, @ £31 Practically the same chip as the Pentium G620 with 1MB less cache.

Have one in a media center and it's a great little chip that runs cool.

Pair it with a cheap H61 board

If you can pick up a cheap 120GB SSD, that will make all the difference to how it feels to use.

I have a 5870 I wanted to use.

I have an overclocked HD5850 1GB and a Pentium dual core would have been an issue in many of the games I run. A number of newer games seem to use more threads and are more CPU intensive(three to four threads used). Even older games like Deus Ex:Human Revolution which is based on the very common UE3,works much better on three to four threads and games like The Witcher 2 are the same.

Even TR indicated with games based on newer engines, latency was poor with a dual core and that was with a G2120.

CPUs like the G620 are not even faster in many games than an old Athlon II X3 455 which lacks L3 cache.

As a secondary gaming rig I would rather pair an HD5870 with a Core i3 2100,Core i3 3220,FX6300,Phenom II X4 965BE or even a Athlon II X4 750K(if you can overclock it a reasonable amount).

If the OP does not mind a warranty on the CPU,perhaps they should look on the For Sale forum??

I've got a G620 paired with an unlocked 6950 in my lounge. A bit of a mismatch(!) but it copes fine with 1080p gaming. Fantastic chips for the money.

Thanks everyone, I have decided against my original idea.

I will get a Z77 board, probably the MSI M power and a 3570k and move my current P67 board and the 2500k into the secondary rig.

:D

Just bear in mind, it won't be a huge upgrade from your current rig, unless you're going to be overclocking.
