Hello,

from this website here

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97_EVO_R20/specifications/

The CPU list is below

AMD AM3+ FX™/Phenom™ II/Athlon™ II/Sempron™ 100 Series Processors
Supports AM3+ 32 nm CPU
Supports CPU up to 8 cores
Supports CPU up to 140 W
AMD Cool 'n' Quiet™ Technology

cheapest AM3+ cpu is (cant link any auction sites or competitors I'm afraid)

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/amd-...hz-socket-am3-processor-retail-cp-339-am.html

but its not exactly cheap!

If you're gonna buy new, OCUK have a £99 FX-8300 for sale at the moment.

Best value you're gonna get really buying new. Eight cores at 3.3Ghz, and if you overclock you've basically got an FX-8350.

If it's just to test, you'll get an AM3 cpu for a few euro on Ebay, or else CEX should have tons available for pretty small money, I got an FX-6300 there a while back for €50. (£40)

They also have older CPUs though, some as low as 2 or 3 € but would be perfect for testing.

Pretty rare for a CPU to die though unless you were putting it under stress from overclocking.

yeah had seen soemthing on cox that was a few quid so ordered that, but i agree on the oddness of the cpu dying. plus with the cpu having been stopping posts for the last few days but then after several tries it would post, then when it posted it booted up fine then ran all day long with no issues at all. thta doesnt strick me as soemthing a dying cpu could do.

still a few quid for a low end cpu i can live with if i have to for a few weeks assuming it then does all work fine.
