What’s the cheapest you have seen the d70s at? ive seen it at £592 delivered.

As a novice is it better to get the d70s now over d50 for future reference, I don’t want to get hardcore into photography just an interest?

If you dont intend to go serious then the d50 is perfect for your needs. The cheapest d70s i have seen is £425 at a local shop but body only.

18-55 coists half of what the 18-70 costs.
The 18-55 :
-is lighter
-has less distortion
-has better zooming

The 18-70 :
-is 2/3 stops faster (doesn't matter at all in digital)
-has faster auto focus
-manual focus override

I would get the 18-55 and the 55-200.
As for the camera, forget the 70, get the d50 which is much, much better than the d100.
Next years models will be ahead of all these models, and cheaper.

well ive orderd the d50 with the 18-55 and a lowepro bag, it c ame to £380 delivered! as you said i shall get the 55-200 sometime and a 1gb/2gb card and that will do me.

check this guys site out as well, protogrepher that reviews a lot of Nikon kit. Some funny reads + some good kit recomendations. i.e. he recommends the 18-55 over the 18-70 for similar reasons to gitara + the 18-70 has very bunched up zooming. He recommends the Nikon AF Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G to pair up to the 18-55. You'll never miss the 55-70 hole really and you'll have a lot of zoom there to play with.

Ken rockwells site

I think i'm going to save up for a D50 or D70s (undecided atm) and i'd love the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18 - 200 mm f/3.5-5.6G DX ED VR, it's amazing but a bit pricy for me.

I'd treat ken rockwell with caution, half the net thinks he's an idiot. I'm undecided, but I get all my advice from my camera shop in london, they're nikon pro dealers and really superb, they're also really friendly and willing to help. I took my D70 in and they cleaned the sensor free of charge no problem.

On this note, if you don't want to spend too much the 18-55 is a good lens on a budget, it's almost certainly as good as the 18-70 in terms of value for money. Personally I like the 24-120 VR but it's expensive and more pro orientated. The 18-200 is a great buy for enthusiasts (i think it's too consumer orientated for serious work) and will do just about any shot for you.

trouble is, they're like gold dust....

it's not all bad but i tend to run it past people who really know (local nikon pro store - who i trust to be honest)

also, just as a thought. when i was looking for a 24-120VR in a hurry i popped into another shop nearby as my usual lace didn't have it. they told me the greatest load of rubbish ever about how it didn't have the special coatings for digital and i'd be far better with some tamron lens. it's rubbish obviously and why they tell you it is that they make far better commission on the 3rd party lenses, if somebody who didn't know better had gone in though.... I swearthere should be a law against that...
