Hey all,

My wife used to play WoW with me a few years back and is now coming to the end of her PhD and is wondering how cheap we could build a PC that would run WoW. WoW is pretty damn old now and with the upgrades in tech in recent years I imagine it'd be pretty cheap?

I have a spare 1080p monitor, peripherals and an OS.

You missions should you choose to accept it:
The cheapest OCUK basket including tower (or mini case) and everything inside needed to run WoW!

Thanks all and A VERY MERRY CHISTMAS!

If you just want to "run" it then it can be done cheap, but running it well is another kettle of Murlocs. The game has been constantly upgraded as time goes on and most recently they had to replace MSAA with weaker AA versions (FXAA/CMAA) as no GPU could actually get playable FPS on max settings.

The minimum specs according to Blizzard are 2GB RAM, a dual core Intel or tri-core AMD chip and a GTX8800/HD4850, however I would not want to try and run the game with that set up.

The recommended specs are 4GB RAM, an i5 or FX-4 and a HD5870/GTX470, however I doubt that would let you max out the game at 1080p (improving the GPU selection should though).

Hey thanks for the response.

I think she'd be fine with playing it on low graphics as the fun comes from the gameplay. We can also set spellEffectDetail low to help fps etc.

I guess a cheap spec with the Recommended hardware then? With the release of the GTX 970/980 series have other graphics cards come down in price?

Blizzard releases system requirements for Warlords of Draenor (latest expansion)

Intel Core i5 2400 or AMD FX-4100 or better
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470, ATI Radeon HD 5870 or better

Hey guys!

Stulid, you are the man, without fail you manage to put something great together :)

I was wondering/hoping/dreaming if sub £300 was possible... £356 (as I have free shipping) is pretty damn close!

Thanks a lot buddy :)

If the only task is WOW then I would build around running wow the best, and an OC'd Pentium K is going to cope with wow much better than the 4300.

Best I can do now some of the prices seem to have gone up:

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI AMD ATI Radeon 7950 BE 3072MB PCI-Express Graphics Card **REFURB 90 DAY WARRANTY** (R7950-3GD5 BE) £85.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED38G2400HC11CDC01) £65.99
1 x MSI Z97 PC Mate Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £64.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £59.99
1 x Intel Pentium K Anniversary G3258 Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £53.99
1 x SK Hynix 128GB SSD SH910A SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (HFS128G32MNB-2201A) £44.99
1 x Xigmatek Mach Midi-Tower Black £23.99
Total : £399.92 (includes shipping : ).

Edit: Either way, you absolutely must use an SSD with wow if you want to world to always load quick enough while fast flying around etc.

Ah great thanks for the input Threepwood!
I'll keep this in mind - currently assessing my funds now that Christmas shopping is over and hopefully sales are to come :)

Can anyone beat Threepwood's build (a smidge cheaper if possible) using Intel chip?
