Cheapest/Quickest way to send something fromn Germany?

I bought something quite expensive off ebay and the seller wants to use Hermes shipping, now I have read reviews that its terrible and want to suggest a quick/not too pricey way of sending from Germany.
Does anyone know a good way? Im guessing DHL will be rather expensive?
Its a mobile phone by the way, just so you know the rough size.

I have sent things via Deutsche Post before and they got to the UK fine (a couple of satellite receivers). Wasn't too expensive either. They own DHL so he can just go to a German post office and they will advise the best/cheapest way.

When I get stuff delivered it comes via DPD normally...However I'm not sure whether or not there are other services prior to that...
