Cheapest route to quad core?

This is just a little project which I will probably never get around to doing. But what would be the cheapest route to getting a reasonable quad core setup? It doesn't have to be the fastest, most cutting edge. If I ever get around to it then it is for a cluster of Java application servers running on virtualisation servers to play around with. So raw mhz is useful but not as important as budget. Memory is significant though, so a cheap processor offset with expensive RAM would not be much use. That probably means I'd be looking at DDR2 which is dirt cheap right now?

So what's likely to be the cheapest budget CPU for at least 4 cores? Opterons, Xeon's, C2Q's, Socket F AMD's, etc?

^^^ what he said - July 22 :) :) :)

Is it me or is everyone really, really excited for July 22nd? Is anyone having a price-cut-party?

edit: @ OP yep pretty much unless you have cash to burn you'd be daft to buy anything Intel before then

sorry im out of the loop on this one, but why are the prices dropping? Will this affect all CPUs or just quads?

EDIT - nm spotted the other thread.

anyone thinking all the shops will drop on the 22nd will be sadly dissapointed.. the price drops are in the usa it will take atleast a week for prices to drop or untill the store has no old stock left after the 22nd

your realisticly looking to the first week in august for them to hit the price drop and have some sort of choice for where to buy

mose traders will try and run out of stock on all intel chips tho

Well the charts are coming from the same sources as the previous price cuts, both Intel and AMD. And they've been correct.

Intel probably won't confirm anything until 22nd July.
