Ok so I'm in need of a rig as soon as possible as this Eeepc is getting a little tedious as far as real world use with photoshop etc so I'm looking to build the cheapest system possible with majority of components being bought from popular auction sites.

However I will be buying new for the PSU.

As far as I can tell LGA775 will be the best route to go

1)Now the next question which is the cheapest LGA775 chip that clocks relatively well.

2)Currently got my eye on an E1500 and an E2160, any other chips I should look out for

4)Which mobo offers best value/performance for second hand.

5)Do I go DDR2/DDR3 so I dont have to shell out for new RAM when I upgrade

6) The rig will be used for some light gaming Sims 3 for the other half and UT/UT2k4 so do I stick with on board or go with a used card such as a Nvidia 8800 (Price Dependant.

I would look at the Q6600 and the E5200,E5300 and E5400 as well. I would stick with DDR2 for the Core2 processors.

I would avoid the G31,P31,G41 and P41 motherboards. I would go for the P35,P43 and P45 motherboards as these are better for overclocking.

I would also get a decent PSU and the ones listed on OcUK are good idea of what to look for.

You can get an excellent am2+/am3 setup for around same price as 775 one and it will be better : ).

try to hunt a 2nd hand am3 mobo with 785 chipset for unbuilt 4200hd gpu ( 30-40quid),
4gb of cheap ram ( 50), x3 425 ~40 quid new !

Hard to beat that even with 775 unless you managet to get a Q6600 for around 60quid and p35 mobo for ~25-30.

The member's market on here is often a goldmine. You need a few more posts though first - there's a post somewhere about it :-)

Other than that, an obvious auction site which we tend not to name as it's technically a competitor. I'm sure one will spring to mind though.

You can get a half decent gaming PC for peanuts.

I got this a few weeks ago- all used :

E5300 and G31 matx mobo and MATX case - £60
4Gb PC6400 - £50 off MM
500W Thermaltake PSU - £28 of MM
8800GTS 320 XXX - £35 of MM

I already had a decent 24ich TFT, hard drives and DVDRW all of which i kept from my previous build.

So for under £175 i got myself up and running again

I'd also took a look at the e3200 and it looks very promising as they will quite easily clock to 4ghz

I would like a Q6600 but as they going for around £110 currently unless I get a few posts in quick for MM access they may be a bit cheaper.

I was looking at going for a Corair PSU as I know these are reliable, and as its the most crucial component I will be buying it new along with a CM-690 II Advanced for when I go water in the future once I've upgraded to a slightly better chip.

Get an E5200,E5300 or an E5400 as they have more L2 cache and seem to overclock quite well from what I have heard.

The R0 stepping is the one to go for AFAIK.

Currently got my eye on two boards both gigabyte

GA-P43-ES3G
GA-EP45C-DS3R

Im assuming the DS3R is the better clocker as I've seen them recommended many times, are there any common issues with either?

The ES3G was actually bought from here
