If you can make do with a WAN to LAN throughput (not sure of LAN to WAN performance in that direction but think it was similar) of around 800mbps, there are some wireless routers with gigabit switches on board for between £50 - £100. I seem to recall a couple of the Asus ones do this. Check on smallnetbuilder site as they have good stats on routers there. I know you dont want wireless but to save money could look in this area.
Thanks, should have said wireless optional. Not a deal breaker.
How about one with a WAN-LAN of 100Mbps (actual). I'm connected to JANET at supposedly 100Mbps via a gigabit switch so should be seeing those speeds (well I have seen those speeds connected straight into my laptop).
If you're on JANET it's worth checking you're allowed to share the connection and any terms of doing so. It's not always allowed, and when it is they sometimes have stipulations about who you share with and how.
For high throughput and low cost you could look at building your own using Mini ITX type boards and pfSense or similar installed. The beauty of this approach is it's easily upgradable and scalable should you need more grunt later. Not to mention it does a LOT more than your average off the shelf router.
However if this is for business use then Cheap isn't really an option as you need to make sure security and support is adequate. (for insurance purposes if nothing else)
