simply looking for a cheap way to extend our wireless internet connectionrange on the house we rent. currently the router is at the bottom right of the house so when at the top left we get poor to no connection so would like another device to connect to our current router but in another room so we can simply plug in and increase the range.

this does't always work but, (assuming you have an omni directional signal), you can put tin foil around the sides of the modem that doesn't have an imaginary line of sight ie

[tf][m] || [c]

where tf is tin foil, m is modem || walls and other objects and c is your computer

Can the router not be moved to a more central location through Ethernet cables?
Are you using wireless g? if so wireless n provides more range but could be costly.
What is your model of router and do you have adsl or cable?

If you can run an ethernet cable up to where you could place another access point, that would be a good option, else home plugs (one wired, one being an AP) would be okay.
