Cheapish car for towing

Back in October i got a Mazda CX5. We drove over to Spain in it in March and it worked perfectly. I wanted to take bikes, and debated a tow bar. However, was put off the fairly stupid prices people were asking to fit one, and went with a bike strap mount style.

I'm now weighing up plans for moving back over there in October when we'll have considerably more stuff.

Options are

1 - Buy a van - Hope to sell it over there. Various risks involved in this
2 - One Way Van Hire - Seems a great option. But only 2 suppliers, and both are booked to the end of September so far, so not much flexibility and we don't have a fixed date
3 - Pay a company to move stuff - Easiest option, but we need to go over with the dog (not sending him with anyone else), and high cost. Also it seems they have to pay customs on your stuff and it's debatable whether you can claim this back. Doing it yourself avoids this as we're relocating

Then i wondered about driving over with a trailer. I think it would be sufficient to take our stuff as we aren't taking furniture or anything. I thought about using our current car. However i'd have to pay ~£500 to add a towbar, and then i'm in Spain with a ~£11k car which could be difficult to move on as post Brexit you can't drive a UK car as a Spanish resident. I could register it in Spain, but there's additional costs involved. Still a possibility though.

The other option is to sell my car, and try and buy something for £3-4k that is fitted with a towbar already. Ideal solution would be something like a Volvo V70 estate/Skoda Octavia estate. This would potentially give a more efficient car for driving in Spain vs the 4.0 Jeep Wrangler that's waiting for me. It could also be worth registering it in Spain and accepting that cost. Downside being it's RHD but that's not too bad. Other downside is my wife hates estates in all forms so a tough sell.

That leaves me thinking about a hatchback. Something Golf like. It could work for my wife as she is reluctant to drive the Jeep and so would like something to use on a daily basis if needed. I assume i'd need a 2.0 Diesel though for towing duties and something like a 1.4 diesel would be fairly painful?

Trailer wise, i'm only really thinking a smallish one like this

Generally, i'd say i've just made this thread to throw out my thought process and for people to tell me if i'm being stupid/overlooking something.

Has the Jeep got a towbar? Fly over to Spain and pick it up, drive back to the UK (or get someone else to), hook up trailer with your stuff and drive back to Spain?

No towbar. And at 13mpg without a trailer it’s cost a fortune!

My dad has an F Pace with a towbar. Just unsure when they’re heading back. If they could position that to a similar time it’d be handy. Even if I had to fly over there. Drive it back and then drive back to Spain.

It’s just a big ask to whack 4000 miles on someone’s car over a week and leave them without a car!

why not drive your car over here and leave it with the parents, take theres and move your items then bring it back? could possibly sell yours here and fly back to purchase a motor in spain?

Realised might notve been clear.

I have a Jeep Wrangler in Spain which I’ve recently bought. It’s sat at my parents place.

My parents live in Spain (same area) and have a Jaguar F Pace

At some point my dad wants to drive home and I did float the idea he drives back. I stick a trailer on and drive it back to Spain and they fly to Spain.
Just not sure on their plans as we would want to drive with the dog which we can only do when we move for good.
At the moment that date is in the air as need to sell the house.

Also conscious that the drive itself is 3 days minimum really (Preston to Alicante). Could probably do it in two but it’d be unpleasant.
Doing it 2 ways would take quite a while and it’s already fairly stressful time.

Basically trying to balance cost, time and convinience!

I'd maybe concerned about trailer security overnight,
with a mate doing shifts in van could probably do a return trip much faster, but a van with steering wheel on wrong side might be stressful versus a good visibility car.

Removals firm I'd used abels effectively put your stuff in a wooden crate which they can lift with a forklift I guess and temporarily store and deliver when they have a combined load for the area,
so maybe able to get a small 4m3 crate say economically, if you pre-box stuff.
had driven an estate car for the final load of, must have available until last minute, stuff, after doing some trial packings (tv! kettle toaster vacuum ....)

Yeah. I’ll be doing the trip with the wife but with her chronic illness it doesn’t really work for her to drive.
I have suggested I drive and she fly but shes not very confident flying due to her condition so I’d likely have to drive alone then fly back to then fly over with her.
Driving on my own means I could just sleep in the car or throw up a tent by the car. Would save on hotels too!

Other option is the ferry to Santander. Then the trailer would be safe in the hold, I could sleep on the ferry and wouldn’t need to stop from Preston to Portsmouth or Bilbao yo Alicante.

Luckily we’re not taking much. All furniture/appliances will likely just be gifted/sold before the move. So shouldn’t have much stuff. Biggest item is possibly a tv as resale value vs cost to repurchase would be high.

Hoping to have a good clear out over the coming weeks and will then have a better idea on load required.
