cheapish performance mods whilst engine is out?

Hey guys,

I'm having a new engine fitted next week due to failure of mine, and was wondering if there are any cheapish mods you can do to an engine that is easy whilst it's not in the car but costs a fortune when the engine is in situ?

It's a long shot, but I think it's worth asking :D

Engine in question is a Ford Duratec 25 2.5l v6.

knife edge the butterfly, port and polish...I'm sure there's a few more.

don't polish the inlets; you'll cause the fuel to drop out of the air. you need some turbulance.

just clean up the casting marks and make sure there isn't a 'step' betwixt manifold and head.

how much do you think it'd be to have that done? Again, how much for a flywheel?

The engine swap is going to cost circa 800 quid inc a sub 30k mile engine hopefully :] Been given a worst case scenario of 1k, but that's just worst case.

Tom.

Ouch not having much lucj with this motor are you. :(

Hope everything goes ok.

Probably cost about £100 for a bit of simple porting done. Wouldn't bother with a light flywheel if you haven't had anything else done to the engine to merit using one.

What's with the light flywheel obsession on here at the moment anyway? :p

I dont know anything :p i just know i'd rather swap a flywheel while the engine is out

real men change flywheels with the 'box still bolted up... ;)

I'd expect to pay 100-150 to have the heads ported. being that it is a v6, I'd expect it to be closer to the latter.

get the performance exhaust manifolds from america £180 shipped roughly and try and get hold of ST200/SVT inlet manifolds and TB.

ive figured why my car made a decent amount more than it shouldve on the rollers, according to some guys on meg the late mk2 came with st200 LIMs :)

I doubt ill have time to get the manifolds from america im afraid.

Tom.

match the manifolds to the heads, easy to do and will give a small gain. other than that get the heads skimmed slightly clean everything up and spend a couple of hundred get it all stripped and balanced :)

blue print it before you put it in.... you would be amazed how crap the casting often is. admittedly its better on newer cars due to manufacturing processes but its never perfect.

all blue printing will cost you is a set of gaskets and some time.

proper blueprinting involves buying new parts, matching and balancing them and getting the entire engine working at the optimum end of its range tolerances.

you're looking at a four figure bill.

...not quite sure what you thought blueprinting was... :/

Not that blueprinting is the best route to power, just the best way to exploit the potential power from an engine when subject to motorsport regulations and having to stay within manufacturing tolerances.

Get the engine from a Noble dropped in instead :p
