Current PC is an 8GB [email protected] Vista64HP. IIRC 5 years old!
I've not built a PC since then so I'm a bit lost as what's good and not so good.

I've just purchased a couple of 60GB SSD ;) and would like to run them in RAID0 with Windows 8. In addition to the 2 SSDs, I'll probably load up with 4 HDs.
I'm not into gaming and the heaviest use of PC is currently ripping my DVD collection. Eventually I'll be ripping blu-rays with this PC. This PC will probbaly need to last about 5 years too.

I'm trying to keep costs down, so £400 max for the core components:

Intel Core i5-3450S 2.80GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (65W) - Retail
Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
GeIL EVO Leggera 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GEL316GB1600C9DC)
OcUK Swift 750W V2 Silent Power Supply
Prolimatech Lynx CPU-Cooler (Socket Intel Socket LGA 1156/1155/AMD Socket AM2/2+/3/3+ )

OK?

TBH for the stated usage i would think your current system would do the job.

Is it just the upgrade itch or is your system not running it?

Either is ok but if your only using it as a media centre it seems a waste of £400

£400 for core components:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £184.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £81.98
1 x Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 500W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £54.98
1 x Thermalright True Spirit 140 CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA775/AM2/AM3) £29.99
1 x OcUK Value 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £26.99
Total : £390.94 (includes shipping : £10.00).

The 3540S is the worst of the I5's really. For a 5 year PC you need a overclocking one really.

Also much better PSU, although in my post above I lsited some other choices too.

8GB of RAM is fine and if you ever need more you can just drop two more identical sticks in. Just find out what size the RAM is.

I'll add my PSU recomendations. :)

Antec High Current Gamer 400W £40.00

Seasonic G series 360w '80 Plus Gold' Power Supply £46.99
140 x W150 x H86 mm very small ideal for small cases

Seasonic X-Series 460w FANLESS '80 Plus Gold £99.98 < If you wanna show off :P

My pick for you would be the Seasonic G series 360w if you never intend to add a high end graphic card.

I'm scratching an itch.
Actually I do have some rather large spreadsheets (with macros) that seem to be taking longer to re-calculate.

I won't be overclocking and when I upgrade my GPU, it will be passive cooled for reduced noise.

Will 500W be enough for 2xSSD & 4xHD?

If you won't be overclocking you will have to upgrade sooner rather than later. Also why does the GPU make any difference to what I specc'd?

Yes 500W will be enough, but what GPU will you be adding. As that may require 600W

My system hasn't gone past 350 W from the wall, so 320 W usuage and it's way more power hungry than this spec. :)

SSDs generally don't use more than 3W. Normal Drives 7 - 9 W is normal with only high performace ones like WD Raptors/Black using a little more
