Cheapo Sound Bar

I've got an old Samsung 51" flat screen which was as cheap as they came when I bought it. It sounds utterly cack and with my two children running about it becomes almost impossible to hear it. My Mam bought an LG TV for a mere £600 a year or so back and it has a built-in sound bar. Even a £600 TV sound bar sounds vastly better than what I have now.

I'm not in a financial position to buy an audiophile setup and am content that a cheap sound bar will do what I want. As it happens I have a pair of TDL RTL 3 floorstanders and a technics SUA 900 amp in the loft, but space and children prevent me plugging them in, so cheap separates won't do either.

Is there anything up to about £100 (ideally half that) which is worth having? A sound base would be ideal and also apple air play, though I realise these are probably out of my reach.

any sound bar at £50 is going to sound just as cack as your TV. (assuming you can find one) even the cheapest ones on richer sounds are about £100.

I wouldn't bother with that budget. You certainly aren't going to find one that does airplay for that price.

I'm using one of these Kitsound soundbars at the moment while i look for something decent in the sales. It'll give you better sound than most TV's but tbh it's not something i'd use long term as it's not that much better, even a similar priced pair of Edifier bookshelf speakers sound far, far better.

I've got Sky Q which I've just realised does airplay. I assume this means I don't need a sound bar with such a facility. The speakers in my TV must be about an inch in size, so I'd be disappointed if a budget sound bar can't improve things, otherwise what's the point in making them if they sound no better than the worst TV speakers? Not that I'm desperate to spend my money of course.

My technics amp didn't work last time I tried it, but it is about 25 years old. Perhaps I'd be better trying to get it repaired and pairing it with a couple of sixty quid wharfdale bookshelf speakers or something. I might be able to fit small speakers next to the TV and out of reach of children.

Philips HTL2163B is currently on Tesco for just under £60.

No Airplay but has bluetooth connectivity......may be a viable option within your budget?
