My onboard sound seems to be borked - it would appear that the backplate jacks are not working (tried everything but suddenly, following a move of the hardware, they have stopped working). I don't want to spend a load of money on a new mobo so that leaves me with getting a 5.1 sound card. Budget would be cheap as possible - features... erm 5.1 support is a must have and is there some hardware that allows MP3 files to be converted to pseudo-surround sound versions?

Creative Audigy/Audigy 2 second hand, around £15. Creative sound blaster Live/Live 24bit, around £8 second hand again (auction site). Both have 5.1. The software may be available online but really music should only be in stereo. If you don't fancy second hand, an electronics store beginning with M sells some cheap cards, £5 I think. No idea on quality though.
