Good evening!

I've just attempted to fit an SSD into my girlfriends PC which is refusing to detect it  so I am tempted to replace it with something super cheap but with some reasonable power. After a bit of a look around Google the current gen of Celerons seem to offer good power while being extremely cheap.

Current spec is: E6550 2.33 Core 2, 6GB DDR2-800, Intel DG33FB.

I don't need disks, graphics card or PSU as these can be removed from the existing build. On a competitors site I can get a G550, motherboard and 8GB DDR3 for just a smidge over £100.

What would you guys recommend? It is used for web browsing, bit of Office work and the odd hour of Sims 3.

Thanks in advance, you guys are awesome :D

Hmm, thanks guys! Is the G5xx range older than the G6xx? Just wondering if the extra tenner for the G620...

There's no good reason why the SSD won't work on the existing board. I think it even has AHCI support.

Agreed. I'm not 100% convinced that the board is good though. Work gave it to me after the previous board died but its had quite a life life.

I've tried the SSD in another machine and its perfectly fine. I've no idea what the issue is really! For the sake of £100 (minus what I can sell) going new would be a lot easier and in the end faster :)

I've placed an order for the G620 and Geil Black Dragon (thanks to Bacon?) and the H61MA-D3V (thanks to Idleman!)

No. All the Pentium Gxxx CPUs are the same CPU, but the higher model number has higher clock that's all. Personally for £50 range, I'd rather pay the extra £7 for the G840, as it is 200MHz higher clock than the G620.

I have to stop somwhere :D. The gf would end up with an i7 or Xeon otherwise! ;)
Ther reason why I say the G840 is the one to go for is because if you look at the following:
G540 2.50GHz £40
G620 2.60GHz £50
G840 2.80GHz £57

So the £7 extra for 200MHz extra on the G840 over the G620 looks a lot better value than the £10 extra that the G620's 100MHz extra over the G540.

But I guess you could argue that the G620's price is justified because the Pentium CPUs has 3MB L3 cache, where as the Celeron CPUs (G5xx) has only 2MB L3 cache.
