Yeah, definitely Phenom II over Core i3. Stulid's build is good but you can have a hex core for quite the same money.

what? without intergrated graphics= FAIL

That board has Radeon 4250 on the board lol.

My last build was Phenom II X6 1055T, wasn't it? It has an onboard graphics card. I realized my mistake with Core i5 as the OP doesn't need/want a graphics card for now.

should have put i in a new post, avoid the confusion,

As tempting as the 1055T is, I think that's one for a future upgrade when 6 cores are more widely utilized.

Few more questions before making a final decision...

1 - Is the 965 worth the extra £15 over the 955?
2 - Would that 500w Antec PSU be enough even if I were to overclocking either of the above chips?
3 - Stulid, is that configuration fully compatible and ready to go out of the box? I only ask as I vaguely remember reading the other day about some AMD BIOS issues and needing an older chip to update the BIOS before the new chip would work with the mobo. Not sure if these were the components in question, however.

Cheers for the advice to you both.

1) the 965 is not worth the extra, all it is, is one clock multiplier higher, this is easily done in the BIOS as the black edition chips have an unlocked multiplier, just enter the BIOS and increase it by +1.

2) its actually 550w, and thats loads of power for that spec, modular too- making a tidy build in the case.

3) that board will work with that cpu out of the box, it was released to market after the cpu, it would maybe only need a BIOS update for HEX core cpus as these where released after.

1) Simply put it - no. They're both BE meaning that only the multi was increased by 1. You can do it yourself without any hassle.
2) Yes, it would.
3) 800 Chipset Mobos are ready for any AMD processors out of the box. - my bad, I stand corrected

its a MAYBE im not even to positive, if hex cores would work straight away.

it stands to reason that a BIOS update would be needed, but on the otherhand GIGABYTE may be sending out motherboards with the latest BIOS already done.

unless you get a motherboard that has been stood on a shelve for a while?

Does this stuff affect the parts I've decided on? Will it definitely work out of the box?

Need to order first thing tomorrow, that's all.

its cool, and will work.

we were just discussing if the HEX core cpus would work straight out the box, so ignore us.

Crappy developments. Due to unforeseen financial circumstances, I've had to knock the budget down to £420.

Still, with all the suggestions posted for alternative components, I should still be able to scrape the i3 build without a problem.

Big thanks to everyone for the tips and advice posted.
