Hi guys, I just turned on my PC and it went to scan/check disk

now normally I will just go meh fine and leave it at that, but not when it does it twice in 24 hours, without me telling it to...

every time it does it its getting bad sectors.... I donno if its hardware, the HDD itself or something worst...or its just software..

with that said it does hang a bit partucaly while scanning, it did this with my seagate 500Gb as well ( I now run a Samung 1TB)

does anyone have this issue.... I ve always suspected that my SATA was going on my mobo but was not sure.... I could test my old hdd but that would been reinstalling windows again and i cba.

Anything I can test it with, apart from the HDD dio tools as I wanna check the data being copyed on to it...seems to performe fine in applications apart from scanning ( I run kes 2010 internet secuirty)

First: BACKUP ANYTHING IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW. DON'T EVEN FINISH READING MY POST. GO GO GO GO.

....

You done? Ok. Good.

Second, you need to run the HDD manufacturer diagnostic tools. They should tell you if there really is a problem. Bad sectors can be remapped, but there may be an underlying issue.

I have a back up HDD anyways, with my data...don't really care about save games as the only game I got atm is just casue 2 and thats steam cloud....

So all my music/pics ( if any) is safe along with all the stuff I cba to re download.

*see sig oh wait I have not mentioned my samsung.

*update* i ve just done a back up on from my main drive to my backup drive, I ve also setup a scan disk on my backup drive... I think tomoz is going to be fun, I will see what my 500Gb does, this will take me a few days to come to a conclusion...HDDs are easy to replace.....also to note could a nasty be the casue of this as well hance software

Have you any virus/malware/firewall protection configured on your PC and are the protection library files up to date?

Sorry guys been busy for the past few days and have been to tired to do anything on my PC.

I m or was running kerpersky internet secuirty 2010, that is updating at this moment in time, I will be scanning soon once its done. I will try Avast and malwarebytes ( is that right?) before moving onto the HDD. than I ll get the Dio tools from samsung.

if the dio tools find nothing would it be a good idea to stripe down the MDR and do it again in case it is the casue? also what is good to use for that, as I only use the stuff that is with linux/windows.

It may be performing a read-only chkdsk, which just identifies an issue. Run a chkdsk /f /r to fix the issue and you might be ok.

As said before, though, back up anything you need to save.

I have got a problem, I think it was my fault I should learn to partication than format...rather than just format.....

I got HDtune Pro running atm and I have a unstable sector......*yikes*

(C5)current pending sector its got a warning on it everything else reads fine...

also I got samsungs ESTOOL but I m trying to burn it to CD as a ISO seems to be failling.

Cheers for the above, thats in Dos prompt yes? thats now sorted for the next time it restarts

as for back up I have a second drive with all my music and stuff on it so I can get away with it....

The firmware should remap that damaged sector to one of the spares all HDDs have. It should be automatic, but there may be an explicit option in one of the diagnostic tools.

Ran dio tools. It did a surfaCe scan. It Had eRrors. THIs was writtan using my phone so I am sorry for THe caps burst:p
AnywaY it recomends I nuke and sTarT again.

Hello guys sorry for the past post I was on my mobile which has a mind of its own..

a little update hence the bump.

i turned on the PC today and it refused to boot from the F3 ran the dio tools to find nothing was wrong with it, so I nuked the MBR by the tools...I got it back up and running again, if the drive was faulty that wouldn't happen...it would just drop out of BIOS as well.

I m hoping it was just a dodgy MBR

But MBRs don't just corrupt themselves for fun. there has to be an inherent fault to cause them, whether that be fault HDD, faulty SATA port/controller, or software that is overwriting it for some weird reason.
I would still say the drive is dodgy, and probably your sata controller/port, if you say the old HDD did similar.
Download MHDD and run that. If you get a load of sectors that are running a lot slower than most, then there is a hardware fault.

Na they don't just courrpt for the fun off it. With that said the last few times I reinstalled, I didn't make a new partiction, I just formatted...this may well be the issue.

As for what happened this morning I have no idea why windows stopped reconising the drive, just wouldn't boot of it, but BIOS could see and so can the Dio tools. means its up and running I ll have to keep an eye on it. thanks for the ultity I use HDtune, is there any difference there? if it does it again I ll open up a RMA with OCuk.

my last drive did keep checking for errors but it never had bad sectors, also the when your doing PC likes hanging when doing heavy stuff which involves SATA... I have made a thread in the past regarding that.

cheers
