Check mail on Exchange server in C#

I've recently set up a small exchange 2003 test server and now want to get to grips with software development for exchange. I need some software that will connect to the server and check for any new mail. It doesn’t necessarily need to read the mail, just check for any new mail and notify the user somehow.

Can someone guide me in the right direction on the best way to connect an XP client machine to an exchange server and see if there is any new mail using C#?
