Check my spec for a £1k quiet PC?

didnt think it was worth starting a new thread, just through it was relevant to this post ..

And i have no idea what 'Yeh like this isn't totally OT...' means lol :p

to match a quality hifi, buy a quality case like the zalman xt160
best advice would come from an avforum I think
a bit of gaming wont tax an average pc, dual core is enough
and you look at the case every day.
quiet enough for a pc under a desk isnt the same as a quiet pc next to a hifi.
you may not want a htpc at the moment, but they are great for reading film reviews, program guides, bbc iplayer etc

Another vote for duel core (idealy under volted)

My first thought based on your budget and your AV spend was a fanless pc (or single fan pc with is better imho).

You could either go for the Mcubed route (but that not really up to part-time gaming) or
the Passive water-cooling route (Zalman Reservator 1plus or 2) s775 will be with us for years
and a quad is an upgrade path from a duel core if needs must, but why should you?
It's a media centre in a living room.

I would recommend you visit silent pc review (SPCR) for more on this
as most people here do not have the experience with ultra quiet setups.
There are a few of us near silent enthusiasts around but not many.

Edit: I can understand many of the overspeced comments above.
But I don't think this will be a full on all singing gaming rig / multi-use pc.
The P182 is also a great case but it has very low W/GAF is a living room (Wife/Girlfriend acceptance factor)

There was a recent thread on this forum on how many fan are in your case.
The average was around 6 fans, I was the only person with none.
Take all our advise with a pinch of salt and have a look as some more specilist quiet/silent pc forums

I have the P182 (with the 3 standard fans) and the Noctua NH-U12P (with its standard fan). Yes it is quieter than my old machine, but by no means "quiet". I wouldn't want it in my living room (unless there was other constant noise in there).

As I read it, he wants a PC now, which later on when he next upgrades he can then use as the basis for a HTPC, theres no point speccing him a crap computer now just because in a few years he's going to turn it into a HTPC

"Usage - playing videos, internet, games (e.g. Team Fortress 2, Champ Manager, COD4). COD4 = high end gfx card really, rest of PC builds itself around that

I may want to use this as a basis for a HTPC in the future, but no immediate plans.
"

Your point is valid but the very first line says:
I'm looking to build a very quiet preferably silent pc as I use it in my living room

I'm not a gamer, so I can't (and haven't) comment on graphic cards - but most 'high end' cards are hot, I'm sure your'll agree -
and having hot components in a quiet pc is not a good idea.

Maybe that fine, and with a 1k budget is possable, but I'll await for more information from the OP.

And at no point has anyone in this thread spec up a rubish pc. There is also no reason to match a high end card with an i7 -
that's just marketing hype (and your own sig shows a duel with SLI).
Don't get me wrong Quads have their place in Render farms/encoding/F@H but I don't think they are required here.

Can I ask what size/model screen is being used?
and if gaming or silent idle/video playpack is more important?

thought about that after, by crap I wasnt meaning performance, but there is no upgrade route for a 775 system, and I cant believe anyone on here recomends someone to drop a grand on a system that youre not going to be able to upgrade

£ 400 on a case is just one choice, its easy to fiddle with the inside after ,
but silent pcs arent crap, just a different thing to the usual oc thing
but if it to be built now, is 7 an option over Vista?
